'A' Level results are out. Well done, bro! (: Congrats to Shanchun and XW as well. Elaine is okay. Don't worry girls, you'll get to go to school! Singapore's education system is flawed. Flawed in the sense that profs fail to realize students like XW who did well in arts subjects even though her rest weren't as good. And then profs rejected her just because of overall grades. Then you make students who actually excel in certain subjects to go through another round just to prove that they have to pass every single subject to get into a Uni. At the end of the day, aren't undergraduates supposed to excel at their personal passions and professions?
Till to date, i cant believe i got into E lit. Thank goodness the present acting dean, Kenneth Chan granted me a chance, the chance where I had a conversation with him in his office rather than an interview. That day after some lit girls attended the HSS ambassador interview, we had a chat...and we found out none of us ever regretted taking this course. Yes there's never ending work and more assignments and readings on top of more assignments and readings...we'll complain, we'll cry, but somehow, we'll all not sleep together the night before the deadline, cheering each other online just to finish the dreaded assignments. What's so good about NTU English division? We work and play like a family. (We=profs, postgrads & undergrads) Not going to say anything more, just in case you think i'm selling my division. Everyone asks what are you going to do with a lit honors? Teach?? If not, what else? 1. We don't care because we gamble with our passions. 2. There's definitely jobs out there for us. It's whether we want to pursue it or not. Ever heard of the saying that you might end up taking a job that has certain or of little significance to what you studied?
Eventually, we'll most likely take up a job that we like, just because we go after our passions. And what if i'm no better in English than others who do not take English lit?
then work my way up! I'm glad Prof Quigley encouraged me that the English language is a technique that can be mastered. This advice really comforted me.
